The benefits of hardwood flooring?

Style
The timeless beauty of a hardwood floor will always be in fashion. It adapts year after year to changes in décor, enhancing every environment and giving a distinction that only nature can produce. Being a natural product, no two hardwood floors are identical, each one being a unique masterpiece of nature!

Durability
Hardwood is nature's own highly durable material. Well cared-for, a hardwood floor will last generations. After years of hard wear they can be easily restored to perfection.

Ease of care
Caring for your hardwood floor could not be easier. Accidental spills are easily removed. Routine vacuuming or sweeping and occasional cleaning with a recommended cleaning product will keep your floor as beautiful the day it was laid.

Health and well-being
A hardwood floor does not harbour unpleasant problems like, dust mites or pet fleas, which can give rise to asthma and allergies. It provides a healthy allergen free environment.

Choice
Natures has given us a hardwood floor in a spectrum of beautiful colours. You can choose from distinctly patterned to simple straight grained. Olde world elegance, rustic charm or simple and modern. A choice of finishes. Your new floor can be as individual as your own taste.

Value
Wood is a natural material which man has used to enhance his environment for many centuries. A hardwood floor is a fixture which matures with age. As well as giving years of pleasure it also adds to the value, and saleability of a property, making it a sound investment rather than just a purchase.

Care
To clean the surface, use a damp cloth or sponge and a mild soap or detergent. Difficult stains such as coffee or tea can be removed using a mild household cleaner/detergent and a soft bristle brush, repeating as necessary. If a stain persists, use a paste of baking soda and water and apply with a soft bristled brush. Light scrubbing for 10 to 20 strokes should remove most stains.

Although baking soda is a low abrasive, excessive scrubbing or exerting too much force could damage the decorative surface, especially if it has a gloss finish. Drain cleaners containing lye will permanently damage any Wilsonart Laminate surface. If you spill a drain cleaner, wipe it up immediately and rinse several times with water. Hair, textile and food dyes can cause permanent stains. If dye should happen to spill, wipe it up immediately with dishwashing detergent or an all-purpose cleaner.

Never place pots or dishes directly from the oven or burner on an unprotected laminate surface; such extreme heat can cause cracking or blistering. Do not work with oven cleaners on an unprotected countertop. Wipe spills away promptly and rinse several times with water. Rust removers contain harsh chemicals which will quickly cause permanent damage. If a spill occurs, wipe off all residue immediately, wash thoroughly with soapy water and rinse several times. Toilet bowl cleaners contain harsh chemicals that can cause permanent damage. If spills occur, wipe up immediately, wash surface with soapy water and rinse several times. Steel wool and other abrasive pads will damage Wilsonart Laminate. Don't use them for cleaning and don't store steel wool pads on your countertop; the metal can rust and leave stains. Should you need help with an unusual problem, please call the Wilsonart toll free Hotline at (800) 433-3222.

Kahrs

Kahrs Swedish Wood Flooring

A tradition of quality since 1857

Unique Swedish styling

Plain sawn for more natural wood grain

An advanced generation UV acrylic urethane finish

The Kährs engineered, three-layered board is guaranteed to prevent separating. Each Layer is bonded with our own special adhesive and placed under extreme heat and pressure. The result is unparalleled within the hardwood flooring industry. Kährs invented and patented this process over 50 years ago.

  • The multi-layer UV Cured Acrylic Urethane finish is factory applied. It is ready to be walked on as soon as the floor is installed. The finish is very easy to maintain and resists most common staining elements in testing done over 24 hrs. Kährs' standard finish is Matte, some floors are available in High Gloss.

  • The top layer of Kährs flooring is available in 11 different species. This wear-layer can be renovated several times and will last for decades. We offer a 25 yr warranty on the durability of the wear layer.*

  • The middle core of quarter-sawn Pine fingers guarantees a lifetime of stability and shape retention.

  • A backing layer of Spruce contributes to the floor's stability. The cross-directional fibers minimize the movements arising from seasonal change.

  • Traditional solid wood cut
Kahrs solid top layer can be professionally refinished twice during its lifetime - an impossibility with thin peeled cuts. Kahrs traditional method of wood cutting, known as plain sawn, produces a finer, more natural wood grain that eliminates the splitting associated with peeled cuts.

The Kährs 1/8" sawn wear layer is comparable in thickness to solid strip style floors - since sanding is only possible down to the tongue and groove of either board.

Designed to withstand the heaviest furniture without splintering or breaking, Kährs solid tongue is the hallmark of our construction. Each board is milled with precise diamond tooling to ensure a tight fit.

Kährs smooth, tight fitting seams and true square boards are precision milled to exacting standards. There is no overwood with Kährs flooring - so there's no need for beveling, and no dirt in the seams.

Kährs offers a choice of 11 species for your floor. Different Species have difference characteristics to custom fit your home. Choose a wood with a subtle grain like Maple for a sophisticated look. Or a floor with color variation and knots to set your home apart from the run-of-the-mill floors you usually see. Let Kährs offer you natural color and grain choices to exhibit your style, while you are assured of the highest quality available. The Natural color of unstained floors won’t walk or scratch off. No need for matching dye lots for additions or in case of repair. The floors in our Style collection have discreet, uniform grain and color for a calm impression. The floors in our Life collection offer a stronger and more natural feeling with knots and variation in color and grain. These floors offer a lively accent to your décor.

    Environmentally Safe

Every health conscious family can breathe easier with a Kährs floor. It contains fewer chemical compounds and virtually emission free. Maintenance for your prefinished Kährs floor does not require chemicals - just damp mop with water.

    Stain Resistance

The factory-applied UV cured acrylic will resist stains for up to 24 hours* The finish will not yellow over time like conventional polyurethane.

    Care

We have just defined, with the help of Webster's New World Dictionary, what it takes to care for a Kährs floor - EASY MAINTENANCE. Essentially, keeping up a Kährs floor is not difficult. The steps are simple, painless and take only a fraction of the time it takes to care for wood floors that require waxing (on a regular basis) and sanding and refinishing (on a periodic basis).

Because of Kährs' computer-applied, UV acrylic urethane finish, you won't need to spend a great deal of time caring for the floor. We've taken care of that for you. But in order to preserve its beauty and durability for years to come and to ensure coverage under Kährs Lifetime Residential Warranty, you should follow these guidelines.

    Common Sense Care & Maintenance

Immediately: Blot up spills or spots with a lightly damp (well-wrung) cloth.

Frequently: Vacuum or sweep your floor daily to prevent dirt, dust and grit from scratching or dulling its finish. Keep mats by doorways to prevent grit from getting into the room.

Periodically: To help extend the life of a Kährs floor and to remove all cloudy residue or dulling dirt-film layers, clean it regularly with Kährs Wood Cleaner. Complete instructions can be found on the label of each bottle of cleaner.

Kährs Wood Cleaner is specially formulated to clean no-wax wood finishes like Kährs' factory finish. It's a cleaner, not a polish, and it contains no waxes or oils. However, since it removes the dulling residue that builds up on the surface of the floor and dries clear with no streaking, it appears to enhance the shine.

Easy & Safe to use in your home!

    • Non-toxic vapor

    • Non-flammable

    • Highly transparent

    • Extremely effective

    Floor Care Tips

While Kährs floors are tough, they aren't indestructible. However, you can generally prevent most problems before they occur with proper care and maintenance, ensuring your new floor retains its natural beauty, strength and durability.

    Do:

    • Support furniture and heavy appliances with wide-bearing, non-staining glides or casters.

    • Moving appliances and furniture into place by sliding them slowly over the floor on a clean piece of carpet (turned upside-down), or on masonite with the smooth side down.

    • Place a quality door mat at the entrance of your home to help protect your floor from abrasive dust and grit and to help save unnecessary clean-up tasks.

    • Maintain normal interior humidity levels (Kährs requires a relative humidity range of 45-60%.
Relative humidity should never fall below 30% or exceed 60%).

    • Place area rugs in high - or concentrated - traffic areas to make long-term maintenance easier and less expensive.

    Don't:

    • Do not use wax conditioners, oilsoaps, or acrylic wax.

    • Do not use steel wool on the floor.

    • Do not use soap or detergents on the floor and never pour water directly onto the floor.

    • Do not use ammonia-based cleaners.

    • Do not use vinegar on the floor.

    Added Protection

Once your floor is installed, nothing is more discouraging than discovering dents or scratches that you could have easily prevented. Because wood is a product of nature, it can be dented or scratched by sharp appliances and heavy loads on furniture legs. Some furniture manufacturers place small-bearing metal or plastic domes, or hard rollers on furniture legs that can cause damage to a Kährs, or any, wood floor.
Combat this potentially-damaging problem by using wide-bearing and non-staining glides and casters and by placing Kährs Floor Protectors beneath the feet of all furniture legs.

We offer both Steel Shank Floor Protectors for wooden legs and bases and Peel-and-Stick Floor Protectors (95% wool felt) for metal or plastic legs and bases. Both provide maximum protection against scratches and dents commonly caused by furniture and appliances.

    Minor Touch-ups

No matter how carefully you treat your floor, accidents do happen. Dropped packages and equipment and other things can dent or scratch any wood floor, regardless of how hard it is. Kährs has designed easy-to-use, user-friendly Touch-Up Kits so you can make minor repairs. We offer kits to match each flooring color.

Each kit contains a filler stick, touch-up market, and a bottle of clear finish. Both simple and inexpensive, Kährs Touch-Up-Kits can be the perfect remedy when you need to repair minor flooring blemishes.

It's rare and extremely unfortunate, but if you damage your floor too extensively to repair by yourself, contact your floor covering dealer and ask for a professional to repair your floor.

Occasional Floor Care: Recoating Your Floor

Kährs floors can be refinished without removing the factory finish. As a floor ages, normal wear and tear will cause a floor to lose its shine. This is natural-it happens to all wood floors! To restore the luster and extend the wear layer of the Kährs wood floor recoat with a water based urethane coating.

Recoating should be done when necessary. Don't wait until the finish has worn off. Call your professional flooring contractor for recommendations as soon as you see a wear pattern developing.

Note: To achieve a uniform look coat the worn traffic areas first followed with a coat over the entire floor.

Recommended Finishes: Bona Kemi (Pacific Strong, Pacific Ultra, Mega). Call Kährs Technical Line (1-888-TEK-KAHR) for other compatible floor finishes.

    Radiant-Heating Systems: Additional Care

Kährs floors are engineered to withstand the rigors of radiant-heating systems. If your Kährs floor has been installed over a radiant-heated subfloor (water-filled tubes run throught the concrete or sleeper subfloor and are heated by a radiator), it is imperative that you follow these guidelines:

    • Upon completion of the installation, solwly raise the temperature to its desired operating level (over a period of one week, beginning two days after installation).

    • Never allow the surface temperature of your Kährs floor to exceed 81 F (27 C).

    • It is especially important that you maintain proper humidity levels (45-60%) in the interior of your home at all times during the year. Run humidifiers and fans as necessary to maintain normal humidity variations.

    Accidents Can Be Remedied

    Wood Flooring

    Quick-Step

Quick-Step Glueless Flooring,by Unilin, the inventor of the UNICLIC joint locking system.

    General

Uniclic is a revolutionary system for installing laminated flooring without using the glue. Uniclic uses an ingenious form of tongue and groove to click the panels together. The Uniclic system enables you to work faster than with traditional, glued laminated flooring, and because there is no glue, it is much easier and cleaner to work with. Quick-Step, Steps, Perspective, and Majestic are manufactured by Unilin Decor. in Belgium. Unilin is a worldwide leader in laminate producttion and was the first producer in the world to manufacture DPL laminate flooring in 1989. Unilin invented the Uniclic patented joint locking system in 1996 and allows some other manufacturers to create a similar tongue and groove under license.

    Unilin's 1.5 million sq.ft. plant in Belgium produces a 40' container every 20 minutes!

5 Big Reason why Unilin glueless floors are better

    • Since Unilin is one of the only vertical manufacturers (they make there own core material), this specially formulated HDF core has a moisture swell rate of less than 7%, this is about 1/2 of the swell rate of other manufacturers! The installed panels show no visible swelling after 5 days of standing water on them!!

    • The core material is stabilized for 7-10 days prior to production, bowed or "banana" boards are virtually eliminated.

    • The milling is precise to within 100th of a millimeter thanks to a multi-million dollar Mituyo Calibrator. The result is the best fitting floor in the industry.

    • Unlike other glueless products, Unilin products can be installed in any direction, left to right, right to left, start in the middle of the room etc.

    • The panels can be engaged on an angle, OR flat against the floor! This unique difference allows for easier installation around cramp spaces and toe kicks.

    • For dry maintenance, use a duster of vacuum cleaner.
    • For damp maintenance: wipe over with clean water or with UNICLIC CLEANING PRODUCT diluted in water. (Never use other cleaning product or detergents !) This product cleans the floor very well and leaves a satin shine. Only use a WELL WRUNG OUT CLOTH. ALWAYS WIPE DRY IMMEDIATELY AFTER until no moisture is visible on the floor. If you do not wipe it dry, the Uniclic cleaning product has virtually no effect.
    • Remove stubborn stains carefully with a little acetone. Never use any scouring products !
    • Quick-Step Uniclic is based on pre-treateed, watertight glued HDF board. Despite Uniclic’s relative moisture-resistance, remove any excess water immediately.

    Witex

    About Witex Laminate Flooring

Witex is a family owned German company started by a visionary engineer, Albert Windmoller. The company began in 1978 in Augustdorf, Germany to make furniture components. In 1990, Ulrich Windmoller, son of the founder, invented a way of making direct pressure laminate flooring with a high-density core board. Today over 70% of the laminate flooring sold around the world is made this way. Through continued innovation, Witex developed glueless flooring technology that now leads the industry.

Under the guidance of Ulrich Windmoller, Witex has grown into a world leader in laminate flooring focused on innovation, precision engineering and ecological responsibility. Witex is sold in over 60 countries, and starting in 2001, Witex is making a new commitment to our North American customers by expanding distribution and planning the construction of a vertically integrated manufacturing facility in North Carolina.

Witex now offers technology that makes installing your new laminate flooring easier
    and faster: LocTec™.

    • Easy installation without glue.

    • Ready to use immediately after installation.

    • Protects against moisture with a sealed tongue and groove.

    • Proven locking mechanism prevents gaping.

    • Easy to remove and reinstall.

The Witex Silent Comfort™ LocTec™ collection of laminate floors features a patented sound-absorption system that reduces floor noise by up to 18 decibels.

    • Silent Comfort™ LocTec™ is a beautifully quiet and durable new floor.

    • Allows a cushioned feel underfoot for a softer walk.

    • Outstanding sound control and reduces noise in every room by approximately 10dB.

    • Impact sound improvements of 18dB in noise transmission to lower level rooms.

    • Faster and easier to install based on pre-attached underlayment.

Water can ruin laminate flooring by penetrating the coreboard and causing the floor to swell. The exclusive AquaProtect™ feature of Witex laminate floors offers complete protection against water damage. The unique coreboard of these floors is the densest in the world to resist moisture penetration. The result is a laminate floor that keeps its great look under spills, splashes and the occasional dishwasher malfunction.

    Care

  • Cleaning your Witex floor is simple - dirt and dust are easily removed with a vacuum or a broom.

  • For routine cleaning and more difficult-to-remove soil, use Witex Easy Clean. Simply apply a light spray of the Easy Clean, directly to the soiled area and wipe with a clean, dry cloth. It's that simple!

  • Heavier stains, such as crayon, felt-tip markers, etc. can also be removed easily with Witex Easy Clean. Just follow the same simple instructions as above.

  • Witex laminate flooring needs no special treatment - just remember to never use soap solutions, waxes, sealers, polishes, or any other type of abrasive materials.

  • Protect the flooring from excessive outside dirt and soil with walk-off mats at all entrances.

  • Witex laminate flooring is best maintained in a balanced room climate with 45% - 65% relative humidity at normal room temperature (86 - 72 degrees Fahrenheit).

  • Chemical spills such as acids, alkalis or petro-chemicals should be removed promptly using appropriate methods. The floor should then be cleaned with plain water and dried with a soft absorbent cloth to prevent any residue remaining on the flooring surface.

    Bambo

    Bambo Bamboo Flooring

    Environmentaly Friendly Grass

    Regenerates Every 2-5 Years

    Nail Or Glue Installation

Harder & More Stable Than Red Oak

    Bambo, the Worlds Finest Bamboo
There's a lot of Bamboo flooding the US market these days, and quite frankly, most of the quality is suspect! We get inundated with offers from Asian vendors to stock and sell their products on almost a daily basis.

Bambo is a proven brand with quality second to none. Our decision to choose this product was based largely upon its extensive use in the Southern California new homebuilder market were Bambo has become the Bamboo of choice. This product is a proven winner with a track record of thousands of installations.

Bambo tells us that the quality of its product can be attributed to its construction methods and Bambo's strict adherence to only produce a product that meets stringent criteria.

First the product is manufactured only in the 36" lengths. Any Bamboo longer than 36" will result in a loss of dimension stability.

Second, the product is on manufactured in a solid 5/8" thick and 3.5" wide construction; Bambo says that after years of experimentation with different thickness, this is the optimal one.

Third, the product is finished with a superior quality German Urethane finish on ALL SIX SIDES - four sides of the tongue & groove, the bottom and the top of the floor. Essentially, the entire plank is "dipped" in Urethane. Not only does this result in a beautiful mirror-flat finish, but also the Urethane on the bottom and in the tongue and groove increases the moisture resistance of the product tremendously and results in extremely tight bonding of the structure.

Lastly, the product is precision milled with the smallest micro-beveled edge in the industry. This tiny bevel results in an extraordinary stunning visual appearance and a fit and finish that's second to none.

    Fast Facts Bamboo: (Phyllosachys Pubescens)
Not actually wood, but technically grass, it is made from the parge timber Bamboo and comes from an area called the sea of Bamboo in China. The plant, which is underground sends up shafts analogous to the blades of grass and can be harvested in as little as two years without affecting the plant. It is the only wood with a class 1 fire rating.

    Horizontal:
The distictive nodes or "growth rigs" are more prominent.

    Vertical:
Lower profile nodes are stacked sideways.

    PREVENTATIVE MAINTENANCE
Good preventative maintenance lengthens the intervals between major renovations operations such as re-coating and refinishing

    • Keep grit off the floor. Use dirt-trapping, walk-off mats at all exterior doors to help prevent dirt, grit and sand from getting inside. Throw rugs just inside the entrances are also recommended. Keep door mats clean.

    • In kitchens, use area rugs at high spill locations and at work stations — stove, sink, refrigerator. Cotton is generally the best fabric since it is easily washed. Mats with a smooth backing, i.e. rubber or vinyl, may trap water beneath.

    • Ultra Violet light sources or sunlight may give the appearance of discoloring under a rug. Occasional moving of rugs and window treatments is recommended.

    • Put fabric/felt glides on the legs of your furniture; they allow furniture to be moved easily without scuffing the floor. Clean the glides regularly since grit can become embedded in them.
    • Avoid casters made of hard materials like metals or hard plastics. Grey, non-marking rubber barrel type casters are best.

    • Overilow bowls and clay pots account for nearly half the water damage in wood flooring. We suggest placing at least 1/2 inch of dense cork, available at most hardware stores, between potted plants and wood flooring.

    • Never try to slide or roll heavy objects across the floor without precautions.

    • Keep heels on shoes in good repair. Don’t walk on your floor with “stiletto-style” heels; they may cause indentation.

    • Keep pet’s nails trimmed

    ROUTINE CARE
    • Blot up spills and spots immediately.

    • Vacuum (brush not beater bar) and/or dust mop weekly.

    • Occasionally damp (wrung-out) sponge-mop

    PERIODIC CARE
    • Periodically clean the floor with a compatible (see product description) floor cleaner, specially formulated for the finish.

    • DO NOT USE WAX, polish or abrasive cleaners, steel wool or scouring powder.

    SUMMARY
Bamboo, like wood floors, are the easiest of all floor surfaces to keep clean and new looking
unlike carpeted or resilient floors that show wear regardless of care.
    Limited Warranty
    SUMMARY
The warranties described apply only to the original purchaser in its original installation, and are not transferable. In the event of product noncompliant with our stated warranties Bambo will, at our option, repair, refinish, or replace the defective flooring.

    PRE-INSTALLATION
It is the responsibility of the installer to inspect and acclimate the planks before installation. Replacement must be requested BEFORE the floor is installed. Detailed preparation and installation procedures are outlined by the National Wood Flooring Association’s Hardwood Flooring Manual (NWFA) 1-800-422-4556

    ADHESIVES
Bambo warrants its undercoated flooring planks against bond failure when Bostik’s Best Wood Flooring Adhesive is used. Consult Bostik’s instructions and warranty regarding adhesion to underlayments or subfloor materials, patching and leveling compounds, sealants or other coverings.
    Bostik’s 1-800-523-6530 / 909-296-6425 ext. 7

    STRUCTURAL
Bambo 5/8” thick horizontal plank is constructed of three layers of solid bamboo strips bonded together under intense heat and pressure. Bambo warrants its products, in their original manufactured condition, to be free from defects in dimension, lamination and milling. If the product should ever delaminate due to a manufacturing defect, we will arrange for either the repair or replacement of the defective plank(s).

    FINISH
Our factory applied UV cured finish (oil-based polyurethane) is warranted for five years from the date of purchase against wear through or peeling under normal traffic conditions. Gloss reduction is not considered surface wear.

    DISCLAIMERS AND EXCLUSIONS
Damage caused by improper storage or handling, improper preparation of, or deficiencies in the subfloor, or improper installation methods invalidates the warranty.

Being a natural product bamboo will continue to expand and contract through heating and non-heating seasons. Properly installed floors may consequently experience some separation between the boards at different times during the year. If such separations do occur, they are not covered by this warranty.

    Harris-Tarkett
    Harris-Tarkett Hardwood Flooring

    Alumide Enhanced Urethane Finish

Cross-Ply Construction adds strength and dimensional stability to the floor

AlumideTM advanced generation UV acrylic urethane finish
    Alumide's features
    • It offers up to 10 times more abrasion-resistance than ordinary pre-finished wood finishes
    • It provides more gloss retention than other urethane finishes
    • Its aluminum oxide particles provide a smooth, easy to maintain surface

Harris Tarkett's Alumide Enhanced Urethane Finish is comprised of the following components:

    • A UV curable stain that colors and seals pre-finished wood in preparation for subsequent UV coatings. The UV curable stain contains a reactive polymer binder that provides excellent adhesion to the wood and to the subsequent UV curable sealers and topcoat.

    • Layers of UV curable sealers comprised of acrylic UV curable resins and proprietary UV curable polyurethane polymer designed specifically for wood flooring. The resins are formulated with aluminum oxide to provide a ceramic/organic composite that provides 10 times the abrasion resistance of a standard UV finish.

    • A scratch resistant UV curable topcoat. The UV curable topcoat is also formulated with a proprietary polyurethane polymer and an aluminum oxide ceramic to provide a tough finish that is resistant to fine scratches that can lead to a visible “traffic pattern” on flooring. The new topcoat provides gloss retention and resistance to household stains that are far superior to standard finishes.
